New Hampshire Rivers Council Focus Group Meeting

Urban Forest Center, Portsmouth, NH Wednesday Feb 29 6-8pm

The New Hampshire Rivers Council (NHRC) is seeking your input on the state's shoreland regulations. As you know, the former Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act was renamed and its provisions greatly changed during the last legislative session. Since then, the Shoreland Advisory Committee (SAC) has been meeting to discuss what is working and what is not. The Honorable David Borden is the NHRC's representative on the SAC and has been carrying the river torch for us all. At a recent meeting, the SAC voted to explore separate standards for rivers, lakes, and tidal waters. Rivers and tidal waters (including tidal rivers) are the driving force for the Council and its membership so your input is requested. We would like to convene a focus group with you. We will provide background information, a comfortable room, and lots of yummy and healthy things to eat and drink courtesy of Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP). You would provide your impressions, experience, and recommendations for better shoreland regulation. We promise to bring that input to the Shoreland Advisory Committee so that our rivers and tidal waters receive the best possible protection. Let's show the SAC and the legislature what we can do to provide sensible and consistent protections for our waters.
Additional focus groups will be announced shortly for the Henniker and Plymouth regions. Directions to the: Urban Forest Center 45 Elwyn Road, Portsmouth

Hands-On Web Soil Survey Workshop: How to Access Soils Information on the Web

March 16, 2012 (snow date March 19th) 9am-12pm

Hosted by: Hillsborough County Conservation District at the Nackey S. Loeb School of Communications, Manchester, NH

Web Soil Survey provides planners, conservation organizations, state agencies, educators, and landowners internet access to relevant soils information needed to make land use and management decisions. Web Soil Survey is a simple, yet powerful way to access and analyze Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) soil survey maps, interpretations and data. During this workshop we’ll explore the three easy steps that will allow you to access a soil map for your “area of interest”, create interpretive maps, review a variety of soils data and generate a customized report. Web Soil Survey is an alternative to traditional hardcopy publications that offers quicker delivery of information, provides the “official” copy of data and allows you to obtain just the information you want.Additionally, the workshop will present a primer on New Hampshire soil/landscape relationships and an overview of useful soil related information available on the NH-NRCS website. Hands-on learning! A limited number of computers (limited to 15 students) will be available to each student to create and print your own soils information. Attendees can plan to bring your own laptop as well (limited to 8 students). Space and options will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so register early! Information will be presented by Karen Dudley, NH-NRCS Technical Soil Services. Directions and parking instructions will be e-mailed or mailed to you one-week before class. C.E.U.s Available: Soil Scientist, Wetland Scientist, Forester, NHDES Subsurface Bureau – 3.0 credit hours. Download the brochure for more information and to sign up - Deadline: March 13, 2012.
