Structure but not Function Restored in Created Wetlands:
Recommendations for Current Mitigation Policy
Dr. Serita Frey
Department of Natural Resources & the Environment
University of New Hampshire
Wetlands provide many important services, with an estimated economic value that, in comparison to other ecosystems, far exceeds their relatively small extent. In recognition of their importance, both national and international regulations exist to protect remaining wetlands. Of growing interest is the “no-net-loss” policy which permits unavoidable destruction of wetlands if compensated by restoration of degraded wetlands or creation of new wetlands. This talk will focus on a recent study documenting that the loss of nutrient-related wetland functions (e.g., water purification, carbon sequestration) is not currently being adequately mitigated by the creation or restoration of wetlands.
Dr. Frey is Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources & the Environment at the University of New Hampshire. Her research focuses on the response of soils to global change
